FWA-NJ: Eating Strategically: Healthy Food Tips for Active Women on the Go

You’re up, out the door, in meetings, and generally on the go every day and all day. So how do you stay fueled and energized without grabbing for that bag of chips or that soda? We’ve all been guilty of that! The good news is there are effective ways to tide over your hunger, sneak in extra nutrients, keep your energy steady, and boost your mood.

Barbara Galvin a registered dietician shares how you can make healthy food choices to sustain yourself throughout the day by eating strategically.

At this session you’ll:

  • Learn practical tips for making healthy food choices
  • Sample easy-to-make healthy snacks that are also delicious
  • Leave with a few recipes to make at home
  • Come away recognizing what works best for you and your active life

You’ll also have the opportunity to tour the Food Pantry and learn more about the vital role it plays in serving those with hunger needs in Morris County. For example, in 2017 the Food Pantry distributed more than 1.1 million pounds of food during nearly 19,000 households visits. You’ll come away with a new found appreciation of how food is collected and distributed; it truly takes a village.

Please bring a non-perishable food staple (i.e., peanut butter, rice, cereal, canned fruit) to make a much needed and appreciated food donation.

SPEAKER PROFILE

Barbara Galvin is a registered dietitian whose area of focus is on community health and wellness. She is an in-store dietitian at ShopRite supermarket, where she counsels and educates customers and employees about nutrition, food trends and science-based dietetic information. Barbara engages with the community about food and its great role as a cornerstone to good health at senior centers, charitable organizations, libraries many local. At ShopRite, Barbara also conducts cooking classes and nutrition-focused store tours and uses the supermarket as the world’s best classroom, where simply walking around the aisles can spark important conversations about the many relationships we have with food. Barbara also works with a private corporate wellness company, BKomplete, where she conducts cooking demonstrations and presentation on nutrition and health-related topics.

She received her Foods and Nutrition degree at The College of St. Elizabeth in New Jersey and has a degree in journalism from St. John’s University, New York. She pursued nutrition in an effort to find answers to seemingly constantly-shifting information about what foods were beneficial to good health. That pursuit turned into a new life focus and a wonderful career. Barbara lives in Morristown, N.J. with her husband and two teenage sons (who eat a lot!).
