FWA-WestCon: Stamford Symphony – Reception and Bernstein Concert

Do you enjoy music? This is a special afternoon program of good music and networking which the whole family can enjoy.

Please join us for “Bernstein at 100”. We will listen to Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story; Gershwin’s American in Paris and the extraordinarily beautiful Clarinet Concerto by Aaron Copland, played by the Orchestra’s own principal clarinet, Pavel Vinnitsky. Composer Joan Tower, who we hope will attend, rounds out the program with her exciting and very accessible work, Tambor.

Originally formed in 1919, the Stamford Symphony has grown to become an integral part of the cultural life in Fairfield County. Its tradition is one of musicianship and professionalism, while taking a fresh, fun approach to programming and performance that appeals to both inveterate concertgoers and newcomers to classical music. The orchestra’s home is the Stamford Center for the Arts' Palace Theatre, a spectacularly renovated former vaudeville house in the heart of Stamford’s downtown.

BONUS: There will be a raffle drawing for two tickets for a special Symphony presentation on January 19, 2019, OSCAR Goes to the Symphony, featuring iconic movie themes from Gone with the Wind to Star Wars and Pink Panther to The Godfather. Bring your business card to enter.

Pre-Concert Reception: Attend the pre-concert networking event for FWA members and guests over wine and hors d'oeuvres and a brief Q&A with Russell Jones, CEO of the Stamford Symphony and a member of the Orchestra. It is a great opportunity to meet other FWA members as well as learn more about the orchestra and nonprofit work from Russell. He has a wealth of experience in non-profit management, having held posts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Scottish Chamber Orchestras and more recently with the New York Philharmonic. He will share his insights in the nonprofit world of finance and management.

Pre-Concert Children’s Presentation: Children from 5-12 are invited to attend a special program called MusiKids where musicians will provide an educational and informative session about the upcoming performance. This program is adjacent to the networking event being held in the Donor’s Lounge. An adult must accompany the children.

Russell Jones, CEO and President of the Stamford Symphony, has held positions in arts management on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK he held posts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Scottish Chamber Orchestras. In 2012 he moved to the New York Philharmonic as director of friends and planned giving, and later held positions including director of major gifts. He joined the Stamford Symphony in October 2017.
